Bear Creek Falls is a 205-foot plunge waterfall in Ouray County, Colorado, where Bear Creek leaps into the Uncompahgre Gorge directly beneath US 550, the Million Dollar Highway, south of Ouray. A viewing platform at a highway turnout looks straight down on the falls, so no hike is needed to see them.
The falls
Bear Creek drops from a glacial hanging valley into the gorge in a single, near-vertical plunge about 10 feet wide. Personal field surveys in October 2017 recorded the height at 205 feet; earlier surveys listed 227 feet, and a 2019 geological field guide gives about 200. The creek drains roughly 13 square miles and has no lakes or glaciers to sustain it, so its flow depends on runoff.
Getting there
From downtown Ouray, drive south on US 550 toward Silverton for about 2.75 miles to a large turnout at a sharp bend, lined by a rock wall. State highway notices place the Bear Creek Overlook at mile point 90.9, about 3 miles south of Ouray. The overlook marks the northern end of the Red Mountain Pass section closed for avalanche work, as during helicopter maintenance in May 2025, so check road conditions before driving the pass.
When to go
The creek runs strongest in spring and early summer. By late autumn the flow drops sharply, and in winter the falls freeze over.

The platform projects from the parking area and looks down into the gorge. No safe route to the base of the falls is documented. In October 2022 a driver was killed when a vehicle left US 550 near mile point 90, just south of the overlook. Across the gorge, a thin seasonal waterfall on Ralston Creek drops several hundred feet.
History and name
A historic photograph in the Library of Congress collection shows the falls at the toll gate on Otto Mears' road between Ouray and Red Mountain. The highway bridge over the falls was replaced in 2010–2012, and the repaired Mears monument was returned beside the pedestrian overlook.
