The type takes its name from Punch Bowl Falls on Eagle Creek in Oregon, where a compact fall lands in a bowl far wider than the stream. Punchbowls form in narrow gorges where a fall keeps eroding the plunge pool while the walls hold their shape. Metlako Falls on the same creek, Upper Yellowstone Falls and Cane Creek Falls in Tennessee are in the catalogue, which lists 88 punchbowls, most of them in Washington and Tennessee.
