Fort Falls is an unconfirmed, 42-foot horsetail waterfall in the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge in Cherry County, Nebraska, about 4.7 miles from Valentine.
The falls
An unconfirmed World Waterfall Database listing puts the total height at 42 feet; the same site is also recorded with a single 30-foot drop, and the two figures have not been reconciled. The site sits at about 2,363 feet in elevation, in the semi-arid grassland of Nebraska's Northwestern Great Plains.
Getting there
Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, lies east of Valentine off Nebraska Highway 12 and County Road 16D/Cornell Bridge Road, where the Fort Falls Hiking Trail leads to the falls. The refuge is open during daylight hours, and vehicles must stay on designated gravel roads. Camping, climbing, and rappelling are prohibited, and travel beyond the road is limited to foot traffic; wilderness exploration on the refuge is on foot only, during daylight hours. Trail distance, grade, and any fee or permit specific to Fort Falls have not been published.
