Haines Falls is a three-step waterfall on Kaaterskill Creek in Greene County, New York, with a current height of about 155 feet.
The falls
The falls are the uppermost drop on Kaaterskill Creek: three steps, with the top step splitting into separate segments beneath a stone arch bridge. The current figure, with an 80-foot tallest drop, is far above an older record of 39 feet that carried no drop count. A separate historical estimate from the 1800s instead put the total between 160 and 180 feet in a single drop.
Getting there
The falls sit on private property and are closed to the public; the only sanctioned view is a distant one from the Escarpment Trail. A local hiking guide warns that a historical approach onto the creek has turned into steep cliff terrain that should not be followed, and says the falls are on Twilight Park land, which does not permit visits.
On site
Because the site is private and closed, there is no established swimming, dog access or on-site facility for visitors beyond the distant trail view.
History and name
The falls have also been called Angel Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Spray Falls, and a formerly parallel segment described in an older account may no longer exist. One local history instead ties "Haines Falls" to one branch of the falls and "Angel Falls" to the longer branch.
