Middle Falls is a 25-foot cascade on the Batten Kill in Washington County, New York, about 1.5 miles from Greenwich, where the river passes under the Route 29 bridge next to a small hydroelectric station. It is a roadside stop, best combined with the paddling and fishing access that shares its name.
The falls
The drop is a single wide, steep cascade of about 25 feet based on lidar data, while Northern New York Waterfalls estimates roughly 15 feet and describes a curtain cascade. A retaining dam sits just upstream of the bridge, and the river spills under the bridge and down the ledge below. The Batten Kill joins the Hudson River a short way downstream.
Getting there
From the junction of Route 29 and US 4 in Schuylerville, head east on Route 29 for just over 3 miles to the bridge over the Batten Kill. Parking is along the road, and the falls are visible from the bridge after about a one-minute walk.
When to go
Seasonal flow isn't documented. The dam feeds a run-of-river hydroelectric station that Boralex has operated since 1989.
On site
The power plant occupies one bank and private land the other, so the bridge is the viewpoint. The Middle Falls Canoe & Kayak Launch and the Tailrace Fishing Trail are at the Route 29 crossing for paddlers and anglers.
