Middle Falls is a 20-foot waterfall on the Pigeon River in Grand Portage State Park, Cook County, Minnesota, where the river forms the border with Canada. It sits about two miles upstream of the park's High Falls, reached by a rough trail from the visitor area.
The falls
The Pigeon River drops here over a ledge of resistant volcanic diabase. The 2026 park map gives the height as 20 feet; the park's virtual tour puts it at 30 feet.
Getting there
Parking is at the park's visitor area at 9393 East Highway 61. The Middle Falls trail is challenging: 4.5 miles round trip over steep rock, roots and dirt, with a climb of about 300 feet. No vehicle permit is needed, because the lot also serves a state rest area. The park is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
When to go
The trail can become very muddy in wet conditions. Peak-flow timing is not documented.

There are cliffs along the river and no cell service; the nearest emergency phone is in the visitor-center lobby. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet.
History and name
Grand Portage State Park opened in 1989 and is run as a partnership between the state of Minnesota and the Grand Portage Anishinabe.
