Sacred Dancing Cascade is a wide 13-foot cascade on McDonald Creek in Glacier National Park, Flathead County, Montana, just upstream of Lake McDonald. A footbridge over the creek, a short walk below Going-to-the-Sun Road, looks straight at it, and the Johns Lake Loop links it with McDonald Falls downstream.
The falls
The drop forms a wide, steep cascade falling about 13 feet based on lidar data. Below the cascade the creek runs through deep turquoise pools, with Mount Brown rising beyond.
Getting there
A turnout on Going-to-the-Sun Road that holds about a dozen cars provides access, with a path dropping down to the footbridge. Continuing downstream to McDonald Falls makes a 1.2-mile out-and-back with 181 feet of gain, rated easy. The Johns Lake Loop, which takes in both falls, is about 2 miles with about 160 feet of gain; its trailhead is on Going-to-the-Sun Road about 1.3 miles past Lake McDonald Lodge and has limited parking.
Summer admission to Glacier is $35 per private vehicle for seven days ($25 from November through April). Non-US residents aged 16 and older pay an extra $100 per person unless they hold an eligible pass. The park requires no vehicle reservations in 2026.

The route is typically open in spring, summer and fall.
On site
The footbridge is the main viewpoint. About 350 feet of new elevated boardwalk on the Johns Lake Loop now replaces the old stretch of road walking. Dogs are not allowed on Glacier's trails. There are steep cliffs and fast water along the creek, and grizzly bears, especially in late summer and early fall; keep back from the edge.
History and name
The name comes from the Ksanka people's sacred dance, first held at a winter camp near Apgar and originally called the Blacktail Deer Dance, which gave the area the name "the place where people dance." The ceremony is now the Jump Dance and takes place on the Flathead Reservation.
