In the western Upper Peninsula near Paulding, Bond Falls drops 65 feet across fractured rock ledges on the Middle Branch Ontonagon River in Ontonagon County, Michigan. An accessible boardwalk at the Bond Falls Scenic Site, managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, provides multiple vantage points of the tiered cascade.
The falls
The cascade measures 65 feet in four drops, with the tallest drop 48 feet, and about 160 feet wide on average, tumbling over three or four distinct steps. Older surveys showed 50 feet, a figure still used in regional guides. A dam upstream at the Bond Falls Flowage, built by the Upper Peninsula Power Company, holds back part of the river; the falls carry an estimated 50 to 67 percent of natural flow, remaining perennial all year. Between the flowage and Lake Superior the river drops 875 feet, and Bond Falls is the first step of that descent.
Getting there
The scenic site is at 12512 Bond Falls Road, Paulding, about 4 miles east of US-45 by way of Scenic Overlook Drive. Parking is along the road, and an accessible boardwalk leads to six viewpoints; a walkway also crosses the river below the falls. The site has picnic tables and a vault toilet.
A Michigan Recreation Passport is required. From 2026 it costs $15 for a Michigan-registered vehicle when bought with the plate renewal; nonresidents pay $12 a day or $42 a year.
When to go
Vehicle access normally runs from mid-May to mid-October, weather permitting. The site stays open to people on foot all year, but in winter trails and boardwalks are not cleared or monitored for snow and ice.

Most viewing is from the boardwalk and its overlooks, with a picnic area at the top of the falls. The Bond Falls Campground upstream is a separate operation of the Upper Peninsula Power Company. The Middle Branch and the Bond Falls Flowage are both stocked with brook trout.
