Lower Falls, also known as Enfield Falls, is a 38-foot veiling horsetail waterfall on Enfield Creek at the eastern end of Robert H. Treman State Park in Tompkins County, New York. It pours into the park's stream-fed swimming pool, a short walk from the Lower Entrance outside Ithaca.
The falls
Enfield Creek bulges over a single ledge in a veil that averages about 50 feet wide and can spread to 75 feet. The World Waterfall Database, which surveyed it in person, measures a single 38-foot drop; older measurements put it at 98 feet. The creek drains about 27 square miles, averaging about 20 cubic feet per second in the wetter months and dropping to around 2 in the dry season. It is counted among the most scenic falls in the Finger Lakes, though the man-made changes around the pool detract from photographs.
Getting there
The park is at 105 Enfield Falls Road (Route 327). From the Lower Entrance, the park road runs about two-thirds of a mile to a parking area, and a walk of about one-eighth of a mile leads to the swimming area at the foot of the falls. Entry is $10 per car and $35 per bus, collected April through November, and the park is open year round from dawn to dusk.
When to go
In summer a temporary dam raises the pool 3 to 4 feet and submerges the base of the falls; with the dam in place, the falls measured 34 feet.
On site
The swimming area is the pool beneath the falls, with a diving board and a concrete patio on the right side. In 2026 it was open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from late June through Labor Day weekend, with swimming allowed only where lifeguards are on duty; the park may close it for water quality or weather. Up to two pets are allowed on a leash no longer than 6 feet, but not on the guarded beach.
History and name
Robert H. Treman and his wife Laura donated nearly 400 acres in 1920, and the Friends of Robert H. Treman State Park record that preparing it for visitors took four years. The park now counts 12 waterfalls.
