Lower Tahquamenon Falls drops about 15 feet in tiered steps on the Tahquamenon River, inside Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Chippewa County, Michigan.
The falls
The river splits around an island here, coming down in three steps on the west channel and two more on the east channel; the two channels cannot be seen together from one viewpoint. The water's amber color comes from tannins draining out of the surrounding swamps.
Getting there
The state park offers riverbank views of the falls, along with the Ronald A. Olson Island Bridge, rowboat rentals to the island, and several overlooks. A 2026 Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry: $15 a year for Michigan-registered vehicles, or $12 a day and $42 a year for nonresident vehicles. As of September 25, 2026, the park's page showed the Lower Falls area open with no closure posted.
When to go
The Lower Falls Hemlock campground and its accessible toilet and shower building operate year-round.

Leashed pets are allowed on all trails and viewing platforms, on a leash no longer than six feet. Swimming rules and any record of injuries or rescues specific to the Lower Falls are not documented.
