Mosquito Falls is a small drop on the Mosquito River in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Alger County, Michigan. A lidar analysis puts its total height at no more than 4 feet.
The falls
The feature is unconfirmed. Lidar found a total height of no more than 4 feet, below World Waterfall Database's threshold for a waterfall. The National Park Service maps three rock shelves on the river instead of one large plunge, the highest of them 8 feet, and other measurements give two drops of about 4 feet each. Older records placed the total height at 13 feet with an 8-foot tallest drop.
Getting there
The Chapel trailhead sits 15 miles east of Munising off H-58, then 5 miles down unpaved Chapel Road, which has potholes and washouts; the parking lot is limited and commonly fills in summer. From the trailhead it is a 2-mile round trip: 0.3 mile on the Chapel Falls Trail and 0.7 mile on the Mosquito Falls spur, over a muddy, rough and uneven path. Pets are not allowed on the trail. The 2026 seven-day entrance fee is $25 per vehicle, $20 per motorcycle or $15 per person; the $45 annual pass and America the Beautiful passes are accepted, and payment is cashless.
When to go
Summer brings heavy parking pressure at the trailhead. In winter, unplowed roads can keep vehicles from reaching it at all.
