Rock City Falls is a curtain waterfall on Kayaderosseras Creek in Saratoga County, New York, in the hamlet of Rock City Falls in the town of Milton. The hamlet takes its name from the falls, which sit beside mill buildings and can be seen straight from a road bridge.
The falls
The drop is a curtain cascade of about 15 feet, with a hydroelectric dam on the creek above it. Below the falls, Kayaderosseras Creek continues to Saratoga Lake, whose outlet, Fish Creek, reaches the Hudson River near Schuylerville.
Getting there
From Saratoga Springs, head west on NY 29 past North Milton, then turn left onto Rock City Road. There is roadside parking just past the bridge over the creek, and the falls are viewed from the bridge itself, so no hike is involved.
On site
A chain-link fence lines the bridge, but it has a small hinged door that can be opened for a clear photo. Beside the bridge stands a stone mill building inscribed "Rock City Mills 1859." The state Department of Environmental Conservation holds a public fishing rights agreement with the Cottrell Paper Company covering a section of Kayaderosseras Creek.
History and name
An older name for the site is Big Falls. The idle Stone Mill, built in the mid-1800s, was bought by Frank Cottrell in 1926, and until the 1920s the Kayadeross Railroad trolley stopped at the Rock City Falls post office.
