Spirit Falls is an 87-foot tiered waterfall in Massachusetts, where the outlet of Little Pond tumbles down the ridge of Jacobs Hill Reservation in Royalston, Worcester County. The Tully Trail passes the stream on its way between the reservation's two ledge overlooks.
The falls
Field surveys from October 2023 measure the main section at 87 feet across two drops, the taller 66 feet, descending as steep tiered cascades about 10 feet wide. Older surveys cited 157 feet. Measured end to end the stream falls much farther: the water weaves 200 feet down the ridgeline over a quarter mile, with other accounts counting about 150 feet in small steps. The small drainage of marshes, bogs and Little Pond keeps the flow light, and logs and fallen branches often clutter the cascades.
Getting there
The falls are on Jacobs Hill, a 173-acre reservation of The Trustees of Reservations on Route 68, about half a mile west of Royalston center. The lot holds only three cars and isn't plowed in winter. Admission is free, and the reservation is open daily from sunrise to sunset. The route follows the Tully Trail for about three-quarters of a mile until the stream comes into view, then descends roughly 125 feet through open forest, following occasional blazes, to the main falls.
When to go
Spring brings the most reliable flow from April to June, fed by snowmelt or heavy rain. Peak volume typically spans mid-April to mid-May, dropping to a trickle in summer unless replenished by two or three days of steady rain; winter visits can encounter icy conditions.
On site
Footing along the route can be uneven, loose and muddy, with rocks especially slippery in spring, heavy insects in summer and almost no cell service at the falls. Swimming is not possible. Dogs must be leashed, mountain biking is not allowed, and hunting is permitted except on Sundays, so reservation managers advise wearing bright orange in season. The nearby ledges look out over Long Pond, Tully Mountain, Mount Grace and the Berkshire Hills.
History and name
The Trustees bought the first Jacobs Hill land in 1975 with anonymous funds and added parcels in 1978 and 1994.
