Upson Falls is a 12-foot tiered waterfall on the Potato River, in Upson Town Park in Iron County, Wisconsin, about 11.8 miles southwest of Hurley and roughly 85 miles east of Duluth, Minnesota.
The falls
The total drop measures about 12 feet in two steps, and the reading is unconfirmed. Some measurements run as high as 20 feet. The Potato River runs here through the Northern Lakes and Forests region, where streams step down over ancient bedrock ledges with dark, tannin-stained water, and it drops into a rocky gorge at the falls. The park sits at an elevation of about 1,382 feet. The Potato River carries three recorded waterfalls along its course, out of ten recorded in Iron County.
Getting there
From Highway 77, Hoyt Avenue leads into Upson Town Park. A viewing walk of about a quarter to half a mile, on gravel and dirt with rocky, uneven sections, reaches the falls. Admission is free, and the park has parking, restrooms, camping, and picnic facilities.
