The waterfall sits on North Fork Sandstone Creek, which carries two recorded waterfalls in this stretch; the larger, Sandstone Falls, reaches 85 feet a short distance away. The area lies in Oregon's Cascades, a high volcanic range where basalt cliffs and lava flows have produced one of the highest concentrations of waterfalls in the country. A local waterfall guide to the area separately identifies a 58-foot Double Falls on what it terms the Middle Branch of the same creek system; whether that is the same waterfall shown here at 38 feet on the North Fork remains unresolved. This is not the better-known Double Falls in Silver Falls State Park, a different waterfall in Marion County on Hullt Creek.
