Devil's Staircase is a waterfall on Wasson Creek in the Devil's Staircase Wilderness, Douglas County, Oregon, about 11.5 miles east of Reedsport and 45 miles southwest of Eugene.
The falls
World Waterfall Database's Oregon list places the falls here, in the Siuslaw National Forest, but marks the entry unconfirmed and gives no height. One photographer who visited estimated a total drop of about 50 feet, made up of individual steps 3 to 5 feet high.
Getting there
The Bureau of Land Management and federal forest managers jointly oversee the wilderness, which is rugged and largely inaccessible, with no developed trails or facilities. Approach roads are single-lane gravel or paved routes that can close, and junctions are unsigned with intermittent cell service; a high-clearance vehicle, a map and a compass are recommended. Twenty-five miles of roads inside the wilderness are closed to motorized and mechanized travel, including bicycles, though foot and pack-animal travel remains allowed.
On site
Motor vehicles are prohibited once inside the wilderness boundary. Steep drainages, cliffs, unstable soil and dense vegetation are documented hazards. Whether visitors can reach the base, and details on swimming, dogs or suitability for kids, are not documented.
History and name
Congress designated the roughly 30,000-acre Devil's Staircase Wilderness on March 12, 2019.
