Sliding Rock is a 20-foot slide waterfall on Looking Glass Creek in Pisgah National Forest, Transylvania County, North Carolina, a natural waterslide where visitors ride the creek down a smooth sheet of rock into a pool. The Forest Service recreation area around it is staffed with lifeguards in summer, and it gets very busy and crowded in that season.
The falls
Looking Glass Creek runs down a gently sloping face of bedrock about 60 feet long and ends in a pool about 8 feet deep. The World Waterfall Database classes it as a gradual sliding cascade and says lidar data supports its 20-foot vertical height. The water stays near 55 degrees all year.
Getting there
The recreation area is on US 276 in Pisgah National Forest, 7 miles south of the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 411, and about 7.7 miles north of the US 64 and NC 280 junction near Brevard. A paved walkway leads from the parking lot to a wooden observation platform. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day the site is staffed from 9 am to 6 pm and admission is $6 per person, with children 5 and under free. Outside that season the area stays accessible, but without lifeguards or open restrooms. The operator's status page reported the site open and staffed on August 21, 2026.
When to go
The staffed summer season is the time to slide. Heavy rain, high water or lightning can close the area temporarily.
On site
Sliders must know how to swim and go down seated; children under 7 slide with an adult. Only approved life jackets are allowed, not floats, tubes, noodles or boards. A railed stairway on the bedrock beside the slide leads back up. In season there are restrooms with changing areas. Picnicking and alcohol are not permitted. Mist and algae make the rocks slippery; visitors should not climb on them or play in the stream above the slide.
History and name
The name comes from the sliding itself. Storm flooding in summer 2021 destroyed a lower viewing platform.
