Looking Glass Falls is a 55-foot plunge waterfall on Looking Glass Creek in Pisgah National Forest, Transylvania County, North Carolina, right beside US 276 north of Brevard. It is a popular stop that can get very busy, and it needs no hike: the falls are visible from a paved walkway at street level.
The falls
Looking Glass Creek pours over the ledge in a single vertical curtain into a pool below. The World Waterfall Database measured the drop at about 55 feet from lidar; most guides give 60 feet, and earlier surveys listed 89 feet.
Getting there
The falls are on US 276, 9 miles south of the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 411, on the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway. Park only in the designated lot on the waterfall side of the road; it is small and fills by mid-morning on nice weekends from spring through fall. There is no fee, the site is open year-round and there are no toilets. A short walk leads to a viewing platform, and wooden steps (94 in total) descend to the boulders at the creek. A 2026 account after Hurricane Helene reports the site open.
When to go
The falls can be seen in any season. Early morning is best for thin crowds, and the lot is sometimes empty on winter afternoons. In winter the falls can freeze. Morning sun rises over the falls, so afternoon or overcast light photographs best.
On site
The street-level walkway and upper platform are the easiest views; the stairway to the creek is steeper, and the rocks by the water stay wet. Mist and algae make the rocks slippery; don't climb on them or play in the stream above the falls. Some visitors wade in the pool on hot days, but the water is cold, the current is stronger than it looks after rain, and there is no lifeguard. The deck can ice over in winter. Leashed dogs are welcome.
History and name
The falls take their name from Looking Glass Creek and nearby Looking Glass Rock, whose icy face in winter reflects sunlight like a mirror. In 1990 kayaker Corran Addison ran the falls and injured his back.
