Sycamore Shoals is a stretch of rapids in Carter County, Tennessee, in the Ridge and Valley region. It lies about 2.2 miles northeast of Central and roughly 5.8 miles east of Johnson City as the crow flies.
The Ridge and Valley is a corridor of long, parallel forested ridges and farmed limestone valleys running the length of the Appalachians. Waterfalls occur where streams cut through resistant sandstone on the ridges.
It is the only recorded rapid in Carter County. Boozy Creek Cascade, 25 feet high, is about 18.4 miles away. Watauga Falls, is about 23.1 miles away across the state line in North Carolina.
